Learning-by-Doing in Solar Photovoltaic Installations∗

چکیده
The solar photovoltaic (PV) industry in the United States has been the recipient of billions of dollars of subsidies at the federal and state level, often motivated by environmental externalities and dynamic spillovers from learning-by-doing in the installation of the technology. This paper investigates cost reductions due to learning-bydoing (LBD) using comprehensive data on all solar PV installations in California from 2002 to 2012. We develop a model of installer firm pricing behavior that allows for economies of scale, market power, and dynamic pricing to quantify both appropriable and non-appropriable LBD. We find strong evidence for both, suggesting a role for solar PV subsidies to improve economic efficiency by addressing a non-appropriable LBD positive externality. However, our results suggest that the California Solar Initiative cannot be justified by non-appropriable LBD alone.

An Economic Analysis of Solar Photovoltaic Installations in Ireland
This paper conducted an economic analysis of the viability of five solar photovoltaic installations in County Tipperary, Ireland. Economic barriers along with policy recommendations are also discussed in detail in order to incentivise solar photovoltaics installations in Ireland. Using costings, solar photovoltaic energy output data and solar radiation data it is also investigated how Irish fin...
متن کاملPeer Effects and Learning by Doing in the Diffusion of Solar
The solar photovoltaic (PV) industry in the United States has been the recipient of substantial production subsidies at the federal and state level, often motivated both by environmental externalities and dynamic spillovers from learning-by-doing in the diffusion of the new technology. Understanding the nature of this diffusion and documenting the empirical extent of these spillovers are crucia...

متن کاملSun and Lemons: Getting over Information Asymmetries in the California Solar Market
A large expansion of photovoltaic panel production in China coincided with a dramatic fall in the cost of solar photovoltaic systems in California and a boom in installations between 2009 and 2013. However the roll of local contractors that install the systems is not well understood. Using detailed data of approximately 125,000 solar installations in California between 2007 and 2014 I argue tha...
متن کاملOptimal Design of Efficient Rooftop Photovoltaic Arrays
This paper addresses a major challenge in the residential solar industry: automated design of cost-effective, efficient rooftop photovoltaic (PV) installations. Optimal designs choose system components, locations, and wiring to minimize cost while meeting desired energy output and complying with all physical and legal constraints. We present a novel lower bound for the energy produced by a PV i...
